During the Day:

People leaning on something while waiting for the Tram.

Bikers using the walkway instead of bike lane. Trash bags in the walk way.

People walking dogs.

Lack of sitting areas.

At Night:

Unorganized movement between Tram waiting area, bike lane, and walk way.

Bikers riding next to each other outside of the bike lane.

Personal vehicle riders speeding past dog walkers.

Faint lines even less visible at night.

How might we provide safety between intersecting modes of transportation while maintaining openness and visual harmony in this urban space?

Exiting the Tram POV

The barriers guide commuters to pass through limited crossing points rather than anywhere along the bike path.

From Street POV

Signage alerts cyclists to an upcoming high-traffic crossing zone, prompting them to reduce speed.

The presence of barriers serves as a visual cue to pedestrians that they are going to cross a bike lane.

Rest & Play

The barrier also provides a place for recreation and relaxation, tying directly into the playful character of the surrounding neighborhoods.

During long-haul flights:

Galley

A speaker designed for a flight attendant, who has limited flat surfaces available to use. Its interface is tailored for the aviation environment, allowing the user to react instantly to emergencies and adjust audio levels when entering designated quiet areas.

Flight attendants take breaks in the CRC, a designated quiet area for the crew to rest.

Confined to cramped spaces with few flat surfaces for long periods.

Need to remain alert in case of emergencies.

How might we allow someone to listen to music when they need to be alert of their surroundings in an environment that also has minimal surface space?

About Me

I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Design in Industrial Design at the University of Illinois Chicago. Previously, I studied Computer Science at DePaul University.

Outside of Design, I am very hands-on and enjoy a variety of arts and crafts. I enjoy expressing myself through dance and gymnastics. Through academics and the Chicago dance community, I am surrounded by creatives whom I learn from and draw inspiration from.
